How can we save water? Free Kindergarten - First Grade Lesson

Teach students how to save water by comparing photographs of a girl brushing her teeth with the water on and the girl turning the water off. Students will also decide if it is better to take a bath or a shower to save water.

At the end of the lessons, students will receive a certificate. They promise how they are going to conserve water.

This free lesson was created by members of Robot-O-Build, our school’s robotics team. We are competing in the First Lego League Tournament. The theme of this year’s competition is Hydro Dynamics. We wanted to teach kindergarten and first grade students how to save water.

As part of our First Lego League Robotics Tournament, we would like to find out how many students will be using our lesson and where their school is located. Please go to http://robot-o-build.blogspot.com/2017/05/please-help-us-find-out-how-many.html and complete the questionnaire. With education, hopefully we can teach people how to conserve water around the world one class and one student at a time.

FREE Water Conservation Lessons

Students read the informational article in which five water experts were contacted and asked to state what they believed were the best ways to save water.

Students read the one page article about Michael D. Cahn and James Cloern's ways to save water.  The students respond to seven comprehension questions.

The teacher copies 1 - 4 pages of the informational text.  The students will read about ways to conserve water from  2 - 5 water experts.  The students complete a table and list three ways to save water next to the water experts' names. The students then use the information from the table to write an essay comparing and contrasting the similarities and the differences between the water experts’ ways to conserve water.

At the end of the lessons, students will receive a certificate as they promise how they are going to conserve water. The students will also write the names of the people who they have taught how to save water.

We have included vocabulary cards to help students understand difficult words from the informational article.

Special thanks to Michael D. Cahn, James Cloern, Madelyn Glickfeld, Kaitlin Hannon, and Tom Tait for making this free lesson possible and for helping us make an impact on this world.

FREE LESSON: How much water do you waste when you brush your teeth?

How much water do you waste when you brush your teeth?

Use this free lesson to find out how much water people waste when they leave the water running for two minutes as they brush their teeth. Worksheets are provided for your students to find out how much water was wasted when Bianca kept the water running while she brushed her teeth for two minutes versus when she wet her tooth brush, turned off the water while she brushed her teeth, and then turned on the water to rinse her mouth.

Students find out how much water was wasted in one day, week, month, and year. There are two types of worksheets provided. One uses liters if your class is familiar with the metric system and the other worksheet uses cups if your class is familiar with the standard system.

Worksheets are provided to have one student in your class do the same activity as Bianca or all of your students may do the exploration activity as a homework assignment.

Students are then asked to take a pledge to turn off the water while brushing their teeth. They are also asked to tell other people they know to not waste water when brushing their teeth. We have provided a certificate you may give to your students after they have helped spread the word on how everyone can conserve a lot of water simply by turning off the water while they brush their teeth.

Thank you for using our free lesson in your classroom,
Members of Robot-O-Build
